Ayia Napa in Cyprus tops the European list and St. Ives is UK’s best
TripAdvisor has released its “World’s Best Beaches” list for 2011. The winners are based on the highest ratings by travellers on TripAdvisor.
Cypriot beach Avia Napa landed the number one spot on the Top Ten European Beach Destinations list, beating Skiathos in Greece and Protaras (also in Cyprus) in third place.
Ayia Napa’s vibrant music scene and nightlife, boat tours and diving spots, combined with its clear turquoise waters and soft sandy beaches, won the European category. Oludeniz in Turkey came in at fifth place, with St. Ives in Cornwall (sixth), and Mallorca, Sicily and Sardinia completing the Top Ten.

With beach culture now very much part of the UK holiday experience, TripAdvisor also announced its top ten beach destinations in the UK. St. Ives won by a long shot, with most of the top ten spots hogged by Cornwall, Dorset, Devon and the Isle of Wight. Famous Tenby in Pembrokeshire, Wales scooped fifth place, with Shanklin on the beautiful Isle of Wight deservedly in the top ten in ninth place. Tenby’s 186-long coastal path has been named the second best in the whole of the UK by judges at Coast magazine, while St. Ives was named best UK beach by the Travellers’ Choice Beach Awards.
