The five-star Meliá Adhiwangsa Surabaya to open 2013
Spain’s best known hotel and vacation ownership leisure group is increasing its presence in the Asia-Pacific region.
The luxurious five-star hotel will open in 2013 in Surabaya, the second largest city in Indonesia which lies on the north coast of the island of Java. The area has a thriving port and is experiencing strong economic growth and good tourist numbers which have boosted the local hotel industry in recent years.
In true Sol Meliá style, the Meliá Adhiwangsa Surabaya will offer guests more than just a luxury hotel. A new shopping mall and golf course there are already open to the public and when the 300-room hotel completes the development in two years’ time, the hotel facilities will include a swimming pool, children’s area, two restaurants, business meeting facilities and of course the golf course.
The new property will be the fifth hotel for Sol Meliá in Indonesia – Sol Meliá opened its very first hotel outside Spain, in Indonesia, over 25 years ago, when the Meliá Bali brought the Spanish brand to the region. More Asia–Pacific locations are likely to welcome the brand in the coming years as the group says it is keen to expand in those destinations.
Sol Meliá is already no stranger to Asia. In 2009 the hotel group inaugurated its first hotel in China, the Gran Meliá Shanghai, and last month it announced a deal with the leading hotel company in China, Jin Jiang, to support Sol Meliá development in China.
One of the most widely recognised names in the global hotel industry, the Sol Melia brands include Gran Melia, Melia, ME, INNSIDE by Melia, TRYP, Sol Hotels, Paradisus Resorts, and the very successful Sol Melia Vacation Club www.SMVC.com which has spearheaded the growth of the shared ownership industry in Spain and beyond in recent years. Although it is best known in Europe for its very strong presence in Spain (184 hotels) and the Canary Islands, other countries flying the Sol Melia flag include Bulgaria, Croatia, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Luxemburg, Portugal and the UK. It also has a property in Cape Verde, four hotels in Egypt (all in the popular resort of Sharm El Sheikh), a growing presence in Asia and a number of hotels throughout Mexico and Latin America and one in the USA.
