The annual survey, put together with help from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, also revealed that Costa Rica, Greece, Malaysia, Mauritius, the US and Slovenia would also be popular.
The report suggested cause for celebration, with tourists planning to holiday more in 2014 than they did last year.
Value for money holidays remain a priority for many. Timeshare favourites appear in the list of the most popular predicted destinations – Turkey, Italy, France, Spain and Greece among them.
Mark Tanzer, ABTA chief executive, said: “We know that Brits hate to cut back on their holidays and after several years of tough market conditions, we are seeing early signs of more optimism amongst British consumers.
“However, with the squeeze on household budgets continuing, we are expecting that tried and tested destinations will continue to perform well in the coming year.
“We are also expecting a range of other overseas destinations to prove popular in 2014, as well as another good year for domestic tourism after the heatwave in the UK in summer 2013.”
Key trends forecast for the year include:
- Same country, different destination – consumers are expected to travel todifferent resorts in known and loved countries.
- The simple life – while 5 star luxury continues to appeal to wealthier tourists, many are craving simple and authentic holidays as they look to escape their day-to-day lives.
- Domestic tourism – Tourism in the UK is expected to remain in strong shape following the feel-good-factor created by last year’s good weather, the Jubilee and royal birth.
- Age groups – the baby boomers (those aged 55-64) look set for another strong year in 2014, after notable growth in 2013
- Tried and tested destinations close to home, tourists will continue to seek well known, good value holidays including Spain, Greece, Italy, Turkey and France.
