Marriott named “Greenest” Hotel Group in UK

One of the leading names in the hotel and timeshare industries has made the top ten in The Sunday Times 60 Best Green Companies in Britain.

Marriott was ranked at number nine, also winning the award “Best Employee Environmental Engagement” for the second year running. Marriott is the only hotel company in Britain to make it into the top ten of the prestigious Sunday Times list, which covers a gamut of industries from government agencies to supermarkets, media to property developers.

Marriott has been sharpening its focus on green initiatives for a number of years now. Its latest goals include reducing energy and water consumption per room by 25% by 2017, educating employees and guests to support the environment, and investing in innovative conservation initiatives to protect rainforests and help preserve the world’s most valuable “commodity” – water.

Ways in which the hotel group have managed to reduce energy waste include its cycle to work campaign, Cycle2Work; cutting down on carbon emissions at the brand’s 58 UK hotels by 3% (despite one of the coldest UK winters on record in 2010/2011); recycling and encouraging guests to reuse towels and turn lights off when leaving their room.

Guests can also donate to Marriott’s conservation project in the Juma Reserve, Amazonas, Brazil, when they pay their bill, if they wish. The project aims to preserve 1.4 million acres of rainforest.

Amy McPherson, president and managing director, Marriott’s, Europe, said: “I congratulate each of our hotels in the UK for their continued innovation and remarkable efforts to do business in an environmentally responsible manner and thank them for helping us to progress toward our goals.”

Its environmentally-friendly philosophy has enabled a significant number of hotels to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill to zero.
