Spain Remains British Holiday Favourite

We may dream of far-flung islands and azure seas, but according to a new report, it seems the British love affair with Spain is alive and well.
Despite the recession, 2012 proved to be a good year for travel, with Direct Holidays recently revealing that Spain, Europe and the USA remained the top destinations.

Here are the resorts that topped the list:

- A European favourite with all nationalities, Spain remains the most popular of all destinations thanks to its soaring temperatures and pristine beaches. Sun worshippers can soak up the heat on the sweltering beaches of Malaga, while culture vultures can stroll through the historic streets of Barcelona. Meanwhile, youngsters like to party in Benidorm, while older travellers enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of the capital, Madrid. Spain is still the timeshare owners’ favourite, too.

- Coming in a close second is our neighbouring country of France, land of British second homes. With a helping hand from its world-famous cuisine and fine wines, France provides a variety of holiday attractions, with Paris remaining the star attraction for city breaks.

Greece –
Despite the economic turmoil, Greece has not lost its appeal. The islands steal much of the limelight, but the whole country has plenty to offer tourists – fascinating history, a hot climate, wonderful food, warm welcomes and endless beautiful beaches. This could be a popular timeshare destination in 2013, as local prices have come down.

- Despite the political unrest recently, holidays to Egypt’s Red Sea Riviera have remained a popular option for those seeking out a culture-rich destination. Alongside the famous pyramids, top-class diving and white sands at resorts such as Sharm el Sheikh are also topping the agenda for travellers.

India – Holidays to Goa are growing in popularity, and it’s easy to see why. The area boasts 125 km of beaches, as well as offering a variety of exotic cuisines – after spending many years under Portuguese control, you can still taste the Latin influence in the spicy local dishes.

– With flight costs plummeting, the so-called "special relationship" between Britain and America continues to blossom – and the variety of accommodations and destinations in the US is second to none. Florida holidays offer tourists adventurous theme parks, Mickey Mouse and golden beaches, whereas New York is a mecca for shopping and style. If it’s hot sunshine in winter you’re after, you can try your luck in the world’s casino capital, Las Vegas and you’ll be guaranteed warm weather.
