Never as hot as other parts of southern Europe in the height of summer, the Algarve is blessed with cooling ocean breezes and pristine beaches. But some of the best holidays to be enjoyed in the region are during the “out of season” months, when the crowds are thinner and the whole area can be enjoyed at a more relaxed pace.
Since the destination enjoys 300 days of sunshine a year, the winter and spring months are a great option for a winter sun holiday or short break (as golfers in beautiful Vilamoura already know!)
So whether you’re longing for some winter sun, or looking to escape for a city break in the next few months, here’s our guide to winter and spring in one of Britain’s favourite winter-into-spring destinations.
January and February in the Algarve
Although January and February are perhaps the coolest months, it’s still plenty warm enough to enjoy the beaches – expect 16C-20C daytime averages. Although the evenings require a jacket and temps can dip down into single digits, the yellow and purple spring flowers are in full bloom, with the cliffs at Ponta da Piedade in Lagos a rainbow of colour by March.
While we can’t promise that you’ll avoid rainy or cloudy days, there are usually blue skies and temperatures will be comfortable in the shade, unless there’s a sharp wind, or even up to the mid-20s in the sun.
If you fancy a visit during these months, then come the weekend before Shrove Tuesday, which is carnival time! Head to Loulé for its Brazilian style Mardi Gras, and many other towns and villages have their own colourful celebrations.
March and April
March and April are among our favourite times to enjoy the Algarve, with the beautiful spring flowers out and everywhere feeling green and fresh. Meanwhile, the temperatures are a wonderful 20C-25C, with plenty of blue skies and to be enjoyed for beach lovers.
Spring is also the perfect time for taking a hike and exploring the glorious Algarve countryside before the crowds hit. If you have young children, then spring is particularly a great time to visit as the climate is so much better for them than the very hot summer months and peak season crowds have not arrived yet.
