London’s historic Tobacco Dock will soon have two new hotels to its name when Starwood Hotels & Resorts’ latest Aloft and Element properties open their doors in early 2017.
Which means visitors as well as Londoners will have the option of exploring the Docklands area from the comfort of their own hotel room.
Starwood, who run a successful vacation ownership division as well, announced the dual-hotel development this week.
Element London Tobacco Dock is a first for the hotel group, as the opening marks the debut of the brand’s eco-wise Element hotels in the capital.
Tobacco Dock has a fascinating history. English Heritage has listed the site as one of London’s important historic landmarks and although a bid to create “The Covent Garden of the East End” on the site in 1990 did not succeed as expected, the Dock looks set to see a new renaissance as interest grows in this fast-emerging business and residential area.
The Docklands are ideally situated within easy reach of the City, Canary Wharf, Tower Bridge and the Tower of London, making them an interesting alternative base for visitors wanting to savour a slice of East London culture.
Tobacco Dock boasts one of London’s biggest meeting, arts and event spaces housed in a Grade I listed warehouse on the banks of the Thames.
The Dock’s warehouse building was constructed in the early 1800s for the purpose of storing imported tobacco, arriving on ships. At the north entrance visitors will see a tall bronze statue of a boy standing with a tiger, a reminder of the times when wild animal trader Charles Jamrach owned the world’s largest exotic pet store near Tobacco Dock.
The statue commemorates an incident when a Bengal tiger escaped from Jamrach’s shop and carried off a small boy who had approached and tried to pet the animal. Luckily Mr Jamrach chased the tiger and saved the boy when he managed to prise open its jaws with his bare hands.
The New Hotels
The new Aloft London Tobacco Dock will feature 251 urban-influenced rooms, all with signature loft-like ceilings, oversized windows and ultra-comfortable plush platform beds as well as walk-in showers and complimentary Bliss® amenities.
The hotel will also feature the brand’s signature W XYZSM bar, an atmospheric public space where guests can mix and mingle, read the papers and catch up on emails, play a game of pool or grab a drink with friends.
In addition, Aloft offers live, free access to local emerging artists as well as some of the hottest bands with Live at Aloft Hotels programming at the W XYZ® bars.
Element London Tobacco Dock
Starwood’s eco-wise Element brand originally launched in 2008, when it made history as the first major hotel brand to mandate that all properties pursue LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) for high-performance buildings. More than just a “green” hotel brand, however, Element is designed to provide the balance that business and leisure travellers need to thrive on the road.
In keeping with the tenets of the Element brand, Element London Tobacco Dock’s 77 studios, one-bedroom and two-bedroom suites will be stylish, sustainable and designed for comfort.
