Executives and students analyse “The Future of the Shared Industry in Europe” at one day Strategy Challenge at l’Ecole Hoteliere de Lausanne
Final year students at the Ecole Hoteliere de Lausanne, Switzerland, one of Europe’s most important hotel training schools, have been studying the shared ownership business as part of their curriculum.
Recently a select group of the shared ownership industry’s leading executives, including Dimitris Manikis, RCI Vice President, Business Development, Europe and Richard McIntosh, Managing Director of Hilton Grand Vacations and Chairman of the Resort Development Organisation (RDO) were invited to visit the hotel school to take part in the students’ final year presentations.
Shared ownership is very much a growing sector of the hospitality industry, and the course at Ecole Hoteliere de Lausanne includes a focus on three business models within the hospitality industry – timeshare, fractional and branded residences.
150 students in their final year took part in the Strategy Challenge. The students had to prepare reports, reviewed in advance by the industry executives. Twelve groups were then chosen to present their findings to their fellow students as well as the invited panellists, then each group was asked questions by the panel and received valuable feedback on their reports’ approach and findings.
The visit was organised by Professor Demian Hodari, with the help of Philip Bacon of HVS; other guests included Preben Vestdam from Valhalla Associates, Stephen Wise of The Hideaways Club, Wim Froon fromThe Resort Agency, and Christophe Piffaretti, Residencium.
The day ended with a Q & A session between the panel and the final year students which not only solicited the experts’ own opinions about the future of shared ownership in Europe, but also provided feedback to the students about their strategic thinking skills as applied to the future of Timeshare, Branded/Managed Residences and Fractional Ownership.
The best teams, as determined by the industry experts, will go forward to compete to represent EHL at the 4th annual International Hotel Investment Forum Strategy Challenge in Berlin, Germany to be held in March 2011.
