US enforces new immigration rules

New immigration rules have been put in place for those looking to travel to the US, it has emerged.

The Electronic System for Travel Authorization (Esta) has been introduced as of today and it means that travellers looking to get into the country have to register their details online at least three days in advance of departure.

It replaces the written green I-94 form and applies to those from countries who do not need a visa to enter the US.

The new system is designed to improve security and has been voluntary since August before becoming mandatory.

According to Frances Tuke from the Association of British Travel Agents, the US tourism industry will benefit from the appointment of Barack Obama to president.

She said that the change in president will bring about a feel-good factor and people will be keen to make their way over to the US to see how it fares under Mr Obama
