Why Tenerife is Way Better than just Beautiful Beaches

For many people, the first thing that springs to mind when they think of a trip to Tenerife, the largest and most populated of the Canary Islands, is a week spent bronzing on the beach. The island also has a bit of a reputation as a party island that Brits head to for drinking and clubbing. This image has been reinforced somewhat as the ‘stars’ of the popular ‘reality’ show TOWIE recently headed to the island, where they spent their time strutting along beautiful beaches and partying in swanky nightclubs. Of course, this element does exist if that is the kind of holiday you are looking for, but then again you can find those kind of holiday destinations across much of Europe.

Tenerife undoubtedly has some gorgeous beaches and is a great destination to go for some serious R&R spent chilling on the beach and swimming in the sea. It’s also perfect for a family beach holiday as the waters are generally calm and safe for the kids to be able to play while their parents take it easy. You can certainly find a lively party scene on the island, but Tenerife has so much more to offer than bars and beaches as it has been portrayed on TOWIE.

Here are just some of the many alternative things you can enjoy on your holiday here:

A Stunning Stargazing Experience up Mount Teide

Tenerife is definitely one of the best places in the world to see the stars. Unlike much of the rest of Europe, there is very little light pollution so the clarity of the celestial bodies above you is truly breathtaking. This is especially the case up Mount Teide, the most iconic landscape feature of Tenerife. This giant volcano has a 3,718 metre high summit, making it the highest peak in Spain and the highest volcano in the world base-to-peak, outside of the Hawaiian Islands!

A great option to be able to see the stars is to take an organised stargazing excursion with Travel Tenerife. Their team will take you part way up Mount Teide to a perfect spot with virtually no light pollution. Once the sun sets, you will witness a mesmerising sea of stars stretch above your head which is a magical experience. You won’t believe your eyes! Your guide will explain to you about the different constellations, pointing out various features with a laser pointer, and there are a variety of telescopes set up for an even better look!

An Amazing Trekking Adventure through the Masca Gorge

While Tenerife is great for a relaxing break, it is also a brilliant destination for those that love a more energetic holiday. Because of its volcanic nature, the island is pretty mountainous (in addition to Mount Teide of course). There are various peaks, cliffs and gorges for those that love walking, trekking and hiking. One such trekking adventure is from the remote village of Masca down to the ocean through the Masca Gorge. The village of Masca is located high up at the foot of the Macizo De Teno Mountains in the South West of the island.

If you are used to driving on straight roads, you might be in for a bit of a shock on the way to the village as you reach it by driving along a narrow, windy road which is a little scary to say the least. If you decide to take this excursion with Travel Tenerife, you will be driven by taxi. The gorgeous views from the village make the drive worth it though, and it feels like being in South America rather than Europe!

"Fill your life with experiences, not things. Have stories to tell, not stuff to show." ~ As I've become older I've realised this to be more and more true for me personally. I used to obsess over the latest technology, fashion brands and other materialistic things. Now those material possessions mean much less to me, because I feel all of that just holds us back from being free. The trek down through the gorge to the ocean takes around three hours and can be done independently or with a guided tour. It is like entering another world as you will see various plants and trees including palms and dense bamboo, mini waterfalls, streams and pools and the cliffs of the gorge on either side. The trek is not like a walk in the park, but it is do-able by almost any age group. At the ocean you can either take a boat to Los Gigantes, or head back up the gorge if your car is at the top!

Enjoy an Incredible Whale and Dolphin Watching Experience

As well as being one of the best places in the world to see the stars, the waters surrounding the Canary Islands, are ranked as being one of the top three whale and dolphin watching destinations worldwide! The waters around the island are teeming with sea life and you are almost guaranteed to see Bottlenose dolphins and Pilot whales on one of these excursions, with the possibility of also witnessing other varieties including Sperm Whales and Killer Whales. There are a variety of different companies that run these excursions such as Freebird One Sailing Company who have a modern fleet of Catamarans, operating out of Puerto Colón marina in the south-west of the island.

This excursion takes around three hours and you are provided with food and drink and a comfortable, smooth sailing experience that you will likely enjoy under a beautiful blue sunny sky. It is a wonderful sight to see these majestic creatures surfacing and gliding along gracefully through the clear Canarian waters, in such a gorgeous setting. As you sail along next to the island with Teide in the background, a soft breeze in your hair and whales and dolphins swimming alongside your boat you will fall in love with the natural splendour of Tenerife!

Happy World Wildlife Day everyone! We share this world with so many amazing creatures great and small and they all deserve their place here just as much as humanity in my opinion. The waters off the Canary Islands are one of the best in the world to go whale and dolphin watching 🐋🐬 Once you see these majestic creatures in their natural habitat you will immediately realise this is exactly where they belong. I strongly believe in compassion for all animals that we share this planet with who live in harmony with their environment (unlike humans). What are the most amazing animals you've seen in the wild and where? ~ ~ ~ #WorldWildlifeDay #WhatsSimonSaying #FridayFeeling #feelgoodfriday #travel #wanderlust #lovecanaryislands #totaltenerife #tenerifetag #unlimitedcanary #unlimitedplanet #traveldeeper #worldshotz #travelstoke #beautifulmatters #beautifuldestination #vsco #vegan #vegans #whale #dolphins #whales #nature #latituddevida #latitudeoflife #islascanarias #canaryislands #tenerife

Trekking around the Picture Perfect Teide National Park

As mentioned Mount Teide is the most iconic feature of the Tenerife’s diverse landscape, with it’s peak towering above everything else in sight. It is the first thing you notice as your plane approaches Tenerife from the air and it can be seen from virtually every part of the island. Surrounding the snow tipped peak though, is the highly impressive Teide national park which is the third oldest in Spain and the most visited national park in Europe, yet another claim to fame for Tenerife. In fact, by 2015 it became the eighth most visited national park in the world, with some 3 million visitors per year!

With Travel Tenerife you can enjoy a wonderful 3 – 4 hour trek around an 11km route which will take in spectacular views of an intriguing lunar like landscape towards the beginning including solidified lava flows, rocks and cliffs. Towards the end of the excursion you will see a variety of fauna and flora including bushes, flowers, bees and lizards and a real variety of life and colour. This is a brilliant excursion to take if you want to get away from everything; noise, people, pollution, traffic. After trekking around Teide national park you will feel calm, relaxed and refreshed!

Go for a Wander and see what you can Discover

While it is great to take organised excursions or follow what the guide books suggest, it’s also highly recommended to just head out from where you are staying and go for a wander. You don’t always need to have a set plan and you will be sure to discover some wonderful sights. This could be a local tapas restaurant or cafe, a colourful town square or a secluded beach where you can enjoy some me time.

In Tenerife there are some great promenades along the coast and many well worn dirt tracks which often lead to something interesting!

This is just a small selection of some of the excellent things to do in Tenerife, without a TOWIE style bar or club in sight, or packed beach. A trip to Tenerife can be enjoyed however you decide to with a huge variety of different options available for an unforgettable holiday, so forget what you think you know and discover the real island. Then again there are certainly many beautiful beaches ….
