The sun-drenched island of Tenerife and Switzerland’s chic ski capital Geneva couldn’t be more different, but both are shaping up to be the most visited destinations for Britons looking for a winter break, according to car hire comparison site carehiremarket.com.
Based on car hire bookings to date for December 2011 and January 2012, the two destinations most in demand are Tenerife and Geneva, along with Faro, Cape Town and perhaps more surprisingly, Belfast.
Last winter. Palma in Mallorca, Malaga and Alicante came first, second and third but with a particularly cold winter and snow forecast in Europe, it seems consumers are either looking for guaranteed sunshine in the Canary Islands or plenty of snow in Switzerland this year.
The original European timeshare pioneers Hapimag, who are based in Baar, Switerland, have already reported that most of their resorts in Switzerland are fully booked for the winter holidays, while the Canary Islands have had a bumper year for airport arrivals, with numbers significantly up on last year’s visitors.
