Three of Spain’s largest unions, CCOO, UGT and USO have all called a strike which will involve ground staff and baggage handling staff at all Spanish airports on August 18th and 26th. Both strikes will last 24 hours, starting at midnight through the following day.
August 18th is the day Pope Benedict XVI is scheduled to arrive in Madrid to attend World Youth Day to be held in the Spanish capital and there’s another reaason the timing couldn’t be worse – for the thousands of British holidaymakers heading in and out of Spain during the school summer holidays this month.
Union bosses are meeting this week to discuss providing “minimum services” to travellers. August is Spain’s busiest month for air travel, with thousands of Britons passing through daily. Almost 6 million Britons visited Spain in the first six months of this year, including 1.5 million in June alone.
