Five Spanish cities in the top 10 most popular flight destinations – and Malaga’s No.1
Skyscanner’s January search results show Spain still reigns, as Britons look for “sun, sand and sangria” to escape the winter blues. Malaga tops the bill and five Spanish cities made the top ten. Faro and Dalaman (Turkey) also appear, implying that British travellers are dreaming of sunshine and beaches while the snowy UK winter overstays its welcome.
Searches for city break destinations such as London, Amsterdam and New York show that people are also looking for urban getaways – shopping in New York, sightseeing in London or exploring Amsterdam’s cafés and canals.
The Skyscanner results are based on searches for “cheap flights” from UK airports. New York, which came in at no. 7, was the only long haul destination listed in the top 10, with Bangkok 11th, Orlando 15th and more distant destinations like Sydney (36th) and Johannesburg (43rd) lower down the list.
France was a no-show in the top 10, perhaps because Britons are travelling by train Paris, and although euro-free Turkey appeared three times in the top 50, predictions that Turkey could overtake Spain because of pound-euro fluctuations proved untrue.
Barry Smith, Skyscanner co-founder and business director commented:
“Following a year of economic stress in 2009, we’re waiting to see which locations rise from the ashes of recession in 2010. Spain is still the top dog by a long shot, but Portugal, Italy and Cyprus have a significant slice of the market and Turkey and Thailand are nipping at its heels. Orlando should do well this year due to the opening of Harry Potter’s Wizarding World, and South Africa will also see a spike due to the World Cup.”
The top 10 are:
1. Malaga (Spain)
2. Alicante (Spain)
3. Tenerife (Spain)
4. Faro (Portugal)
5. Palma (Spain)
6. London (UK)
7. New York (USA)
8. Lanzarote (Spain)
9. Dalaman (Turkey)
10. Amsterdam (Netherlands)
