Iconic London Melia Hotel on track for pre-Olympic Opening

Leading hotel and timeshare group Sol Melia will open one of their most iconic hotels in years, just in time for the London Olympics.

The location, at the corner of the Strand and Aldwych in London’s theatre land is a landmark for the group because the hotel combines the historic façade of the legendary Marconi House with a new building, mixing history with contemporary comforts.

The site was affected by a fire in June, which threw the hotel’s pre-Olympic opening off track.

However Melia Hotels International CEO Gabriel Escarrer said, “We expect to finish April to May at the latest in order to run it two to three months ahead of the Olympic Games,” which would be a delay of only one month from the original planned opening date".

The 156-room “ME London” will wow guests with its striking pyramid-shaped lobby area and amenities include fitness and business centres, complimentary wifi throughout, a rooftop bar with views of Somerset House and the Thames and the fashionable in-house New York restaurant STK House.

After 55 years, Sol Melia recently rebranded to Melia Hotels International and its vacation ownership division Sol Melia Vacation Club is now Club Melia. Escarrer said the new brand reflects the group’s increasingly globalised portfolio, with 32 new hotels in the pipeline before 2014, mainly in China and Brazil as well as Vietnam and Thailand.
