Day 1 in Tenerife – A small hitch and the start of a great adventure

I woke up before my alarm for my first ever trip to Tenerife and an exciting week at the lovely timeshare resort of Pearly Grey, right next to the ocean on the beautiful Costa Adeje with my colleague John Beckley, so you can imagine my dismay when our plane left four hours late from Lanzarote airport because of some unexpected repairs.

Free coffee and WiFi was small consolation for missing our booked trip to Aqualand Costa Adeje. But no worries. We rescheduled it for the next day and made other plans. Nothing was going to get in the way of this exciting adventure.

You know the thrill of heading to new destinations, especially one so popular and well loved, and I had a whole week’s worth of excursions to look forward to. All was set for a fantastic week!

The awesome views of Fuerteventura and the ocean I enjoyed during my flight soon gave way to a blanket of grey cloud as I landed on Tenerife, but despite this, the island still looked spectacular.

Luckily, when I arrived at 4pm, John was still waiting for me at the airport, but unfortunately I was too late for the first day’s booked excursion to Aqualand Costa Adeje. The main thing is I had arrived safe and sound though, and there was still a week of exciting things planned, plus plenty of time to check out some of the island that day.

By around 4pm I was seated in John’s car and, as we headed south, the clouds that were hovering over the airport all but vanished and the weather improved dramatically, revealing an amazing landscape. Within about 10 minutes I had already fallen for the charms of Tenerife with its’ striking mountainous landscape, verdant green vibrancy and stunning coastline.

Before heading to Pearly Grey, we stopped off at the lovely village of Alcalá which is just a short drive north from the timeshare resort. This is a beautiful place where you can still get a feel for what life would be like in a small, charming fishing village. Enjoy the picturesque tree-lined square, colourful buildings and an amazing coastal walk. I know I did!

After some time in Alcalá we headed south to the Pearly Grey Timeshare Resort and checked in. It was a pleasure to finally meet Gemma, who had kindly been organising all the excursions for my trip. She is very welcoming and friendly, and made me feel at home at Pearly Grey straight away. After a quick chat at reception, I headed up to my room on the second floor. The room itself was very well furnished, clean and modern. I immediately knew this was going to be an excellent place to stay for the week.

From the walk-way to my room, you can enjoy views of Tenerife’s awesome mountainous landscape, and as I stepped out onto the balcony, I was greeted by the even more stunning view across the resort’s sun terraces and swimming pools, to the Atlantic Ocean and the island of La Gomera on the horizon. Breathtaking!

Later on that evening John and I had dinner at Pearly Grey’s restaurant, where the staff are all extremely welcoming, friendly and professional. Being a vegan can prove difficult sometimes in terms of what and where I can eat, but Pearly Grey caters well to dietary requirements. I enjoyed a vegetarian curry with an assortment of vegetables, rice and a delicious sauce. To top off the evening and cement the wonderful start to my trip in Tenerife, we enjoyed an impressive and entertaining magic show put on for the resort’s guests. Did the audience like it? The thundering applause told you all you needed to know.

My first impressions of Tenerife are that it is an amazing island full of life and energy, with beautiful scenery, warm sunny weather, and friendly residents. I’m definitely looking forward to everything else I have in store for the rest of my trip. I would like to say a big thank you to Poul’s Auto for providing the rental car for the week, and of course to the amazing Pearly Grey Timeshare Resort and all the fantastic staff for making me feel completely at home.
