Top Ten Winter Breaks for Sun Worshippers

With the big freeze already creeping up on us and the dark nights well and truly set in, many sun worshippers will find themselves staring wistfully at old travel brochures as Christmas now fast approaches.

If you’re longing to feel the scorching sun on your skin and see temperatures soar, then taking a winter sun break is the perfect solution. We have rounded up our top ten sun holiday destinations for this chilly festive season.

 South Africa:

Although it’s in another hemisphere entirely, Mandela’s home land South Africa is in the same time zone as the UK, meaning no jet lag. Visitors to the area fall instantly in love, thanks to the varied landscapes and breathtaking scenery.

Sun worshippers will fall for the charms of Cape Town, which boasts some of the world’s most stunning beaches and landscapes. Visitors also come back again and again to enjoy the world-class wines and incredible foods on offer.

To soak up the sun and enjoy the coastline, head to the amazing Garden Route, or take a road trip through the Western Cape. Meanwhile, the quieter Overberg Coast has plenty to offer, with its wide, sandy beaches, coastal reserve and spectacular eateries.


Just a seven hour flight from London, this sandy island of shell pink beaches and houses is definitely a must-visit. Enjoy some of the world’s most lovely sands along the South Shore, or visit the ever-popular Horseshoe Bay. If you do visit Horseshoe, then take some time to explore and visit the  quiet patch of sand, cut off from the rest of the beach by a rocky hillock.


Although much of the Mediterranean surrounding Cyprus is chilly in the winter, this island enjoys plenty of sunshine all year round. Plus, with short flight times from the UK, there’s no excuse to not hop over. Visit in March to see this sunspot’s flowers start to bloom, and enjoy plenty of peace and quiet before summer’s crowds arrive.


A popular retreat for sun lovers in the winter, Kerala is as far removed from much of India as you can get. Calm, cool and lushly green, Kerala is also known as ‘God’s Own Country – and it’s easy to see why. Enjoy this little piece of paradise and be sure to visit the spectacular Fort Cochin, too.


It may not be the first destination you’d think of when it comes to Africa, but give Sengal a go and prepare to fall in love. With stretches of golden sands, wonderfully exotic foods, lively music and plenty of wildlife to photograph, this is the perfect country for enjoying come winter.


Boasting one of the world’s most spectacular sun rises and some of the most incredible landscapes you could ever hope to find, Cambodia is a true Asian paradise. Based 14 hours from London, it is a bit of a trek – but we promise that it’s worthwhile. Prepare to have your breath taken away as you watch the sun rise over the jungle temples of Angkor, or enjoy the laid-back vibe of its capital Phnom Penh. Either way, be sure to enjoy the dazzling beaches on offer.


Nestled deep in the rainforests of Central America, the ancient Mayan city of Guatemala is bursting with colour and noise. The 14-hour flight from London is totally worthwhile, just so you can see the spectacular jungle temples, the laid-back beachfront bars and the incredible wildlife on offer. Just be sure to pack your camera.

Soak up the romance by taking in one of the many lakeside palaces, get lost in the hustle and bustle of Jaipur or escape into Jaisalmer’s desert landscapes. We also recommend taking a tiger safari at sun rise in the incredible Ranthambhore Tiger Reserve.

Canary Islands:

It’s summer time all-year in the Canary Islands, a second home for many British timeshare owners.  Temperatures hover in the mid-20s whatever the month or season, so it’s a great place to visit if you want to skip winter for a week or two! Why not make a break from the usual travel crowd and skip the traditional favourites of Lanzarote, Tenerife and Gran Canaria. Instead, head for the unspoiled islands ofLa Palma, El Hierro and La Gomera.
