If you’re planning a trip to Bangkok this year you’ll be relieved to hear that the State of Emergency imposed on January 22 looks likely to be lifted very soon.
Thailand’s National Security Council Chief Paradorn Pattanathabutr has announced that there is a “very high chance” that the emergency ban will be lifted in Bangkok and the surrounding provinces in the near future.
Hotels and resorts, too, which have been feeling the pinch, will be looking forward to a return to normal and to welcoming more visitors again to the country’s beautiful shores.
If you’re heading to Thailand soon, we’ve selected 3 don’t miss destinations worth putting aside time to discover while you’re basking in the Thai sunshine for a week or two:
1. Ko Chang. The second largest island in Thailand, Ko Chang is a stunner. Waterfalls, coral reefs, rainforests and long white sand beaches give it that idyllic paradise feel you dream of escaping to after a hectic week in the office. It’s quieter than Phuket or Ko Samui and only recently has it made the Thailand tourist radar, so it might be better to go sooner than later if you’re looking for a strip of beach to yourself.
2. If Ko Phi Phi in Southern Thailand looks familiar, that’s because it probably is! This dive excursion destination was used as the location for the 2000 movie The Beach. No longer a closely kept secret, it’s busier than before but still well worth visiting.
3. Thai islands seem to pop up a lot in films – Phang Nga Bay is another “I’ve seen that place before” example. Remarkable because of its sea stack called Ko Ping Kan (aka James Bond Island), it was featured in The 007 movie The Man With The Golden Gun. While you’re there, take a sea kayak into the grottoes and sea caves – they’re quite magical.
