Travellers to Spain are being warned that the general strike on Thursday 29 March will severely affect train, bus and flight travel with just a fraction of normal services in operation.
The strike action is a protest against employment reforms and austerity measures – Spain’s budget is on Friday 30 March and it looks set to be a tough one.
Only 20% of flights to European cities will operate, there will be no regional train services but local trains and underground services will operate at just over a third of their usual capacity.
Public demonstrations are also planned and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office is advising travellers to check for travel delays prior to arriving in the country and add extra time to their itineraries to allow for delays, particularly to and from airports.
Spain’s recently elected new prime minister, Mariano Rajoy, is facing a tough week when he will be forced to announce €40bn (£33.45bn) in spending cuts and taxes in a budget on 30 March, the day after the general strike. More Spain timeshare news
