The beach guide to Tenerife

With easy flight times, year-round sunshine and a host of family-friendly resorts and hotels, popular timeshare favourite Tenerife has always held a top spot on the winter sun short list.

So as summer fades fast and winter beckons, here are our pick of the best beaches on this Canary Island family favourite.

1)    Playa Del Duque (Costa Adeje)

Once a black sand beach, Playa Del Duque was turned into a glamorous destination in the 90s when white sand was deposited on top. Thanks to the calm waters, it also happens to be a firm favourite with families because of its good swimming conditions. Costa Adeje is also home to some of Tenerife’s most luxurious five-star hotels and most upmarket restaurants and shops, which has made it a firm favourite with its loyal international fan club.

2)    Los Cristianos

This wide stretch of golden sand is one of the most popular beaches on the island. However, even during peak season, it never feels too crowded. Couples will enjoy a romantic wander along the promenade fringed with palm trees, while more active types will enjoy the range of sports, from beach volleyball to snorkeling.

3) Playa Jardin

This stunningly picturesque beach was created by local artist Cesar Manrique, who designed its landscape and ensured the beach was studded with palm trees and colourful botanical gardens. The contrast between the green trees and leaves and the sweeping volcanic sands made Playa Jardin one of the most strikingly elegant resorts in Tenerife.

4)   El Medano

This two-mile stretch of beach is based near the airport and is a firm favourite with surfers. The sand here is naturally light in colour and is backed by sweeping sand dunes. Meanwhile, take your pick from restaurants and eateries as there’s plenty of choice – and the prices tend to be a bit lower than in the busier resorts.

5)    Puerto de la Cruz

The sands of this urban beach are strikingly black, while it has a full range of facilities. There is also a stretch of beautifully well-kept gardens backing on to the beach and plenty of restaurants and cafes lining the promenade. Children will also love one of the top attractions on the island Loro Parque theme park, home to parrots, sea lions, dolphins, penguins and even a killer whale or two!
