We’ve rounded up some old favourites and new discoveries, all waiting to be discovered in 2014. Here are some of our favourite picks for your next timeshare break abroad – and we’ve included one surprise, much closer to home!
New hoteliers, chefs and winemakers are attracting a new breed of traveller to Greece these days and that’s especially true of Mykonos and Santorini — the most spectacular of the Cyclades Islands.
Romantic and extremely picturesque, either would be an ideal choice for a getaway for two. The volcanic soil of Santorini is producing some spectacular wines, and the locally produced food is excellent. We recommended sipping on a gin and tonic while watching the sun go down, a sun set not to be missed.
Malta is quickly becoming a hip place to hang out. It has the weather, bars and DJs of Ibiza, but without the hefty price tag. There are huge open-air clubs such as Gianpula in Rabat, La Grotta — a club built into a cliff face on the nearby island of Gozo — while Ministry of Sound and Creamfields both rock up to Maltese Music Week.
Malta may not be strong on beaches but it more than makes up for that with its beautiful historical town centre and stunning surroundings of towering fossil-studded cliffs with crystal clear sea.
“Land of Lakes and Volcanoes” Nicaragua is beautifully untouched, and a nature lover’s dream, with flowing rivers and tropical forests that carpet the country. It’ll could be a while before the hordes who flock to neighbouring Costa Rica give Nicaragua a go – so take a trip while it’s still crowd free if you crave a break away from everyone else.
What’s pitched to be the world’s greatest sporting event in 2014? North of the Equator, there’s only one contender: Glasgow – for the Commonwealth Games. Glasgow has undergone a great deal of renovation giving it a new hip and edgy feel to it in recent years so if you’re heading north of the border it’s worth stopping off for a night or two to explore what’s new.
Australia remains top of the wish-list list for 2014; vast, diverse and endlessly surprising, it is one country that is hard to get enough of. The varying landscape is harsh but sublime and awe-inspiring.
Must not miss destinations include the Gold Coast, spending time on the Great Barrier Reef and of course a trip into the great red desert to restore your perspective on life like few other places on Earth can.
