Aer Lingus Airbus

Aer Lingus has posted an operating loss of €19 million in the six months to the end of June, that’s a reduction of 80% on its operating losses during the first half of 2009.

The airline has resisted two takeover bids by Ryanair Holdings and according to chief executive Christoph Mueller, the improvements in performance are significant considering it’s been a tough year with unexpected losses due to the Icelandic volcanic ash crisis which hit Ireland and many of the regions the airline flies in and out of.

Picture the scene: green fairways undulating across Scotland ’s legendary “golf country”  . . . forests tinged copper,  . . . in autumn colours a Cornish fishing village, lost in time . . .

Book a short break this winter and it’s the kind of scenery you could be waking up to. But what if the weather doesn’t co-operate? Then steal a few hours at the hotel spa or pool, or settle in with a glass of something good and finish the book you can’t put down while the rain pelts outside.

Long ago, the idea of a British holiday break might have conjured up images of chilly B&Bs with faulty heating, plastic tea-makers and fuzzy TVs, but thankfully most of those two star disasters have gone the way of the dinosaur.

UPDATE: The planned strike has been averted. See this article on GoTimeshare.org for more information:

easyJet is warning passengers to check their flight status given uncertainty over flying due to the Spanish air strike threat, before they leave for the airport and have said they will transfer passengers to an alternative flight to the same destination free of charge, all of which can be done at www.easyjet.com

Passengers who did not book their flights through the website, however, should request a flight rebooking by calling the call centre on 0871 244 23661.

Refunds may also be an option, although if flights were originally booked through travel agents, the flight cost must be claimed back through that agency.

EasyJet is expanding its route network with a new twice-a-week flight to Luxor in Egypt, starting this November.

The services will depart Gatwick on Mondays and Wednesdays, offering a competitive fare for passengers heading to the region and its attractions, including the Valley of the Kings and Nile cruises.

The fare, £127.81 return including tax, looks set to tempt the number of visitors to the region; EasyJet already flies to another Egyptian hotspot, Sharm el-Sheikh from Gatwick, Luton and Manchester, and the new flight to Luxor (five hours flying time) will offer travellers another winter sun destination to escape to this winter.

UPDATE!

The planned strike has been averted. See this article on GoTimeshare.org for more information:

Ryanair has asked the Spanish government to help ease the effects of the Spanish air traffic controller strike which, if it goes ahead, will start August 18th and last three days.

The strikers are protesting at government plans to change their work hours and reduce overtime pay and more than 2,000 nationally have voted for the strike which could affect some two million passengers (many Spanish workers take their holidays in August and the strike couldn’t come at a busier time).

The dispute with the Spanish government has dragged on since February, when overtime hours and controllers’ pay were slashed. According to some reports, some controllers were earning as much as £290,000 a year, more than the Spanish prime minister Mr. Zapatero earns, and the government wants to increase their hours and shorten their rest breaks.

If you’ve ever had a great, or awful, flight, this month’s Which? Magazine airline satisfaction survey makes interesting reading. When a major national carrier resumes flights to a destination, it’s a sure sign of tourist demand and that’s the case with BA’s plans to start flying from Gatwick to Cancun in Mexico again later this year, after it cancelled the service eight years ago.

The Cancun addition follows the launch of routes to Montego Bay, the Dominican Republic, Sharm el Sheikh and the Maldives late last year. Cancun is a popular destination for timeshare owners, in particular east coast Americans who escape to its top resorts for winter sun. Just recently, The Royal Sands, a Cancun-based resort run by Royal Resorts, came third in a Trip Advisor www.tripadvisor.com user poll, voted one of the best places for family holidays in the region.

Ryanair plane on take off

A certain Mr. Michael O’Leary will be celebrating this week. The controversial Ryanair boss has announced full-year profits of €319 million after tax, following a not so great  year in 2009.

Ryanair said passenger numbers were up 14% to 67 million in the year to March, while airfares fell 13%.  In an announcement on Ryanair.com, Michael O’Leary says principal highlights of the past year include:

Volcanic Ash Alert

Nobody could have foreseen the eruption of an Icelandic volcano as a cause of air travel disruption, but new rules from the CAA mean that planes will now be allowed to fly through airspace with “medium density” ash – meaning far fewer aircraft should be grounded during future eruptions.

If you are planning to fly, here are some of the main resources with updates on the ash cloud and how it’s impacting air travel:

Aer Lingus

Aer Lingus is urging the EU to urgently look at the procedures it uses to predict volcanic ash concentrations, after Ireland’s airspace was closed last weekend, affecting millions of passengers across Europe. The closure was based on “theoretical” models to predict the ash density but these models were later proven inaccurate when the level of ash was actually measured, the airline said.

Aer Lingus chief executive Christoph Mueller said the current model has been proven inaccurate several times.

New policyholders may not be able to obtain insurance against future flights grounded by the volcano “pa-lava” which again is disrupting air travel in Europe, and this time areas where no-fly zones have been designated include France, Italy and the west coast of Spain.

Insurers are now saying it’s highly unlikely that they will pay compensation for cancelled flights and the news comes with the summer holidays fast approaching.

Aviation experts are warning that there could be more cancellations in the coming months and independent travellers booking their own flights are finding it hard to locate any insurer prepared to pay up against future cancellations. Insurers who did compensate passengers during the first travel chaos episode are now saying they will not, going forward.

With a massive backlog of flights now facing holidaymakers trying to get home, despite the opening of European airports, timeshare resorts which are members of the Resort Development Organisation (RDO) have been working tirelessly to provide emergency accommodation for stranded guests, helping them get home whenever possible now that the flight ban is officially over.

Families with children have found themselves taking an unexpected extended holiday in sun-soaked holiday destinations such as the Costa del Sol, Cyprus, The Canary Islands and the Algarve, right before the start of the new school term.

A number of resorts have stepped in to provide last minute arrangements and accommodation for families unable to get home, with resort teams working flat out to ensure owners either have somewhere to stay if no immediate flights are available, or help with last minute travel arrangements.
