The crème de la crème of luxury Caribbean resorts scooped multiple awards at the WTA recently, dubbed “the Oscars of the Travel Agency”. The event was held at Sandals Royal Caribbean Resort & Private Island in Montego Bay last month.
VIPs and top travel industry executives were there for the fifth and final leg of the prestigious Awards which culminate in a gala ceremony on December 11 in Doha, Qatar.
The Montego Bay night was the “Caribbean and the Americas” Gala Ceremony, following previous heats which have already taken place in Dubai, Antalya in Turkey, Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt, and Bangkok.
All of these destinations also happen to be top timeshare and fractional destinations, and the Caribbean (along with Florida and California) is consistently voted a favourite winter sun timeshare escape by American timeshare owners.
Jamaica has enjoyed a strong year with visitors up almost 6%; one of its numerous awards was “Caribbean’s Leading Cruise Destination”.
The honeymoon favourite of the night was st. Lucia, which won the coveted “Caribbean’s Leading Honeymoon Destination” while Sir Richard Branson’s Necker Island won the “Leading Private Island” category.
Competition for the “Leading Resort” category was particularly stiff with Casa de Campo (Dominican Republic) staving off competition from Half Moon (Jamaica), Jumby Bay (Antigua), Four Seasons (Nevis) and the legendary Sandy Lane in Barbados.
All of the regional winners during the WTA Grand Tour 2011 will gather in Doha on December 11 for the Gala Final.
