Brits delay holidays until post-Olympics

It looks like many Brits will be home for the Olympics to support Team GB before they take off on holiday after the Games have finished.

Comparing holidaymakers’ plans with previous years, some surveys are showing that bookings will be up 10% in the three weeks after London 2012, compared with the same time last year.

New data produced by Amadeus and ForwardKeys shows that departures to any destination from London for the period before the opening ceremony is 5% below 2011 levels, which may indicate that Brits are choosing to stay home and then treat themselves to a holiday after Olympic fever has subsided.
The survey, based on actual international air reservations, also shows that 13% more visitors will be coming to London than last year, with Germans and Americans being the biggest markets to the capital during the Games, although a significant number of Australians will be making the journey over for the celebrations too.

The top nations heading to the Olympics are: USA 19%, Germany 8.2%, Australia 6%, Italy 4.3%, Canada 3.7%, Russia 3.4%, France 2.9%, Netherlands 2.9%, Great Britain 2.6% and Brazil 2.4%.

In other research, travel insurance specialist Columbus Direct says the Olympics are making 40% of Brits delay summer holidays, with two out of five juggling their getaways because of the Games while one in ten has decided to holiday on British shores so they can stay home for the biggest sporting event on this year’s calendar.

Cost seems to be the main factor for those choosing a staycation in the UK with 41% planning to holiday at home and almost half of that number saying they will leave booking until the last minute so they can get a good deal.

Greg Lawson, spokesperson for Columbus Direct said: “With the recent Jubilee celebrations and the Olympics around the corner, and despite the awful weather, a British holiday is proving to be the most popular option for 2012. It’s great to see us all spending more time holidaying at home but people often forget that we take more clothes and valuables with us on holiday in the UK than abroad. With your car, caravan or cottage including mobile phones, laptops, cameras and even a games console, it can make sense to buy travel insurance. Sometimes, possessions can be insured via your home insurance but, if not, travel insurance will provide that protection.”

With a superb choice of timeshare resorts in UK beauty spots such as Devon, Cornwall, the Highlands and the Lake District, owners who have made bookings for August or September may be the luckiest ones as the British summer finally seems to be putting a shine on things.
