British Airways fans nominate their top 13 holiday hotspots for 2013

British Airways has come up with its top 13 destinations to visit in 2013 and Asia overall is looking like a strong favourite.

In a recent poll on the airline’s Facebook page, over 2,660 users nominated the overseas destinations they most want to visit during this year.

New York was voted number one (with 22 per cent), next came Australia (eight per cent), Hong Kong (seven per cent), Rio de Janeiro (five per cent) and Dubai (three per cent).

British Airways also compiled it own top 13 for 2013 with the help of its database and a panel of experts, and the top spot goes to…Sri Lanka. This tropical island has enjoyed a boost in recent years, becoming the must-visit destination for the more intrepid traveller.

Ash van Wensveen, British Airways’ destination manager, commented: “There’s a real buzz about Sri Lanka right now. For a small island it offers a lot, from endless beaches, to elephant treks and several Unesco world heritage sites to visit, it’s hard to think what Sri Lanka doesn’t offer.”

British Airways will be launching new flights to Colombo this April.

In second place was one of the countries which will hog the world spotlight over the next few years: Brazil, and specifically Rio de Janeiro. The city is already gearing up for the 2016 Games, the 2014 Brazil World Cup and FIFA Confederations Cup next year.

One new destination opening up is Seoul in South Korea. Mike Rock, British Airways commercial manager Seoul, said: “There’s a lot happening in Korea right now, business is thriving and it’s a tourist destination on the up. The mega metropolis is home to some ten million people, and is attracting a fresh new audience.”

British Airways recently launched new flights to Seoul from Heathrow, flying from London six times a week.

One of the new timeshare favourites, Croatia, is another pick for this year. Dubrovnik has been wowing visitors, including more than a few celebrities including Beyonce and Jay-Z with its pretty Adriatic coastline, gourmet offerings and picturesque historic city.

Also on the up is Vietnam. Rather like Thailand twenty years ago, it’s now on the radar, particular for travaellers who want to explore somewhere more “untouched”. British Airways flies to Hong Kong and passengers can pick up a connecting flight to Ho Chi Minh City using OneWorld partner Cathy Pacific.

Punta Cana on the south coast of the Dominican Republic is another rising star, and another favourite with timeshare owners. BA says it’s the combination of affordability, good hotels and great Caribbean beaches that make it an irresistible option.

Other destinations on British Airway’s hot list include Derry in Northern Ireland and Las Vegas while Tbilisi in Georgia, San Diego in California, holidays in Cape Town, Alicante and Dubai make up the rest of the new year shortlist.
