Southend Airport gets a £100m makeover

Some of Essex’s best-known celebrities turned out at a star-studded event at Southend Airport recently to celebrate the airport’s £100 million makeover and official re-launch.

Southend airport in Essex used to be one of Britain’s premier transport hubs and was a popular hub for those flying across the Channel during the ‘60s, before car ferries and Stansted took over. Its glory days faded and until now it has mainly been used for cargo flights or by private jets.

Things are set to change, however, as Southend undergoes a major revamp prior to its re-launch. The airport is expecting around two million passengers to pass through its doors in the near future now that EasyJet is basing aircraft at the “new” hub. Southend airport currently services only one destination – Waterford in southern Ireland, but EasyJet is introducing new flights to Malaga, Ibiza and Majorca from Southend starting April 2.

Aer Lingus has just confirmed it will also launch flights from Southend to Dublin, offering onward connections to the US, with three daily services from Dublin to New York, Boston, Chicago and Orlando in Florida commencing May 10 onwards. The Southend – Dublin route will be operated by Aer Lingus’ franchise carrier Aer Arran, now rebranded as Aer Lingus Regional.

Pop star and mum-to-be Stacey Solomon, who lives near Southend in Essex, attended the launch party and treated guests to a performance. The event attracted local stars associated with the county, including cast members from The Only Way Is Essex.
